The hardware concept began in 1956. Barclay Simpson inherited his father’s window screen company and one Sunday evening, Barclay Simpson’s doorbell rang. A neighbor’s brother had stopped by to ask if he could make a product to connect the ends of 2 x 4s for a roof. Barclay replied, “Of course!” So, he sat down with his plant foreman, developed some rough sketches and used a punch press to create his first joist hanger, according to the Simpson Strong Tie website.
There are a vast number of Strong Ties available for use. So many in fact, Simpson publishes a more than 350-page catalog. Simpson is constantly updating their products to meet the ever-changing code requirements and regulations all over the world. As a result, they publish a new catalog every year.
Over the course of the next several posts, I will talk about the most common fasteners that Zion Builders uses on every wood structure we build. The first one is also the first one Simpson made.
This hanger is made from steel and is designed to be nailed into a wood framing member (such as a ledger) to support a joist or rafter that is perpendicular to the ledger. This connection is stronger than simply nailing the two members together. This hanger installed with nails supports more weight than just the nails alone!
