LOOK AT THIS DIRTY DECK
In this post we will talk about, how to effectively maintenance your composite deck. and what your warranties options are :)
Deck Warranties
Composite decking is made from a mixture of 95 percent recycled wood fibers and plastic, offering a durable and low-maintenance as well as environmentally friendly alternative to traditional wood decking. It is resistant to rot, splinters, and insect damage, making it an attractive choice for outdoor spaces. However, organic material build-up on the deck can cause mold and surface damage. Common brands of composite decks that Zion Builders installs are Trex and TimberTech.
In northern Nevada, Zion Builders is the only platinum installer of Trex. This means that if you install with us, you get a five-year labor warranty on a deck OR rail. A 10-year labor warranty if you have a deck AND a rail. You also get a 12-year labor warranty if you have us install a deck, rail and fasteners. Trex decking and railing limited residential warranties range from 25 to 50 years.
Maintenance Considerations:
The great thing about composite decks is that they don’t need sanding, staining or sealing like wood. They are far more resistant to fading, but exposure to sun and weather can still affect their appearance over time. Regular cleaning helps. This prevents the buildup of dirt, debris, mold, and mildew. Doing it twice a year, every spring and fall is good practice, or just after a big storm.
Cleaning Steps:
To clean your composite deck, start by sweeping away leaves, dirt, and debris with a soft-bristle broom. Next, mix mild dish soap or a gentle deck cleaner with warm water. Avoid using harsh chemicals, bleach, or ammonia-based cleaners as these can damage the deck’s surface. For an efficient and safe alternative, Trex Select decking recommends a homemade cleaner made from 1 cup of vinegar, 1 gallon of warm water, and 4 or more boxes of baking soda (depending on your deck size). To use this mixture, first mix the water and vinegar and apply it over the decking. Then, sprinkle the baking soda on top and scrub all the boards with a soft-bristle brush, adding more vinegar solution as needed. After scrubbing, rinse the deck thoroughly with water. If necessary, you can use a pressure washer on a low setting (around 1,200 psi) to rinse off any remaining debris, but be careful not to damage the surface. For stubborn stains, you can use a composite-specific cleaner or a mixture of baking soda and water but always test a small area first to ensure there is no discoloration. Clean the railing using the same method as for the deck surface. This is a good time to check for loose screws or damage.
Preventing Damage
While composite decks are durable, they still require care to prevent common types of damage such as scratches, stains and fading. It's important to avoid harsh chemicals like chlorine bleach, abrasive cleaning pads, or solvent-based cleaners, as these can damage the surface. Instead, stick to cleaners specifically labeled as safe for composite materials.
To prevent scratches and surface damage, use furniture pads or rubber feet under furniture to protect the deck when moving chairs or tables. Avoid dragging heavy objects across the deck and always lift furniture rather than sliding it. Additionally, be cautious when using a grill or fire pit, as sparks and hot embers can cause burns on the surface. To protect against staining, clean spills immediately, particularly those involving food, oils, or drinks. Using outdoor mats or rugs in high-traffic areas can also help reduce wear and tear on the deck.
Winter Care and Snow Removal
In areas with harsh winters, proper care during the colder months is essential to protect your composite deck. When removing snow, avoid using metal shovels or metal-tipped shovels, as they can scratch the decking boards. Instead, opt for a plastic shovel, broom or a snow blower. If ice removal is necessary, choose a calcium chloride-based ice melt product that is specifically designed for composite decking to prevent discoloration or surface damage. Before the first snowfall, it's a good idea to clean the deck thoroughly to remove any debris that could trap moisture and lead to staining. Unlike wood decks, composite decks do not require sanding or refinishing. However, if you notice excessive fading, the material may be covered under warranty. If not, composite-specific paints and stains available. Always check with the manufacturer before applying any products to your deck to ensure compatibility and avoid voiding any warranties.
Conclusion
Maintaining a composite deck is relatively simple compared to traditional wood decks, but it still requires care to maximize its lifespan and beauty. Regular cleaning, proper maintenance, and taking steps to prevent damage will ensure your composite deck stays looking great and performing well for many years to come. By following these tips, you can enjoy a beautiful, low-maintenance outdoor living space for years to come.
