Among my responsibilities at Zion Builders, Inc., is to stay informed about changes and innovations in the products we use for patio covers and decks. In previous posts, I have discussed the International Wildland Urban Interface Code, also known as IWUIC or simply WUI. This code was created to help prevent wildfires from spreading to structures, and it has been adopted by building departments in northern Nevada where wildfire risk is a constant concern. WUI code directly affects how I design decks, and until now the selection of deck boards approved for WUI areas has been very limited.
Because of these limited options, Zion Builders, Inc. has played a key role in helping Trex recognize the need for WUI compliant decking boards and move forward with developing Class A products. Trex recently announced that it has begun manufacturing a new line of decking boards called Trex Refuge that fully meet WUI requirements. This is excellent news for the communities we serve, especially in Washoe County and the areas surrounding Lake Tahoe.
These new Type A, PVC decking boards, combined with our construction methods that use heavy timbers according to local building codes in WUI zones, will help keep our decks as fire resistant and safe as possible. They also allow us to offer the beauty and durability of Trex to more property owners in northern Nevada.
The new boards remain eco‑friendly because Trex continues to use recycled materials in their production. They have limited availability in two new colors: Point Reyes, a misty grey color; and Martis Valley, a light brown. Based on our extensive experience securing deck permits that meet each municipality’s requirements, we expect to be among the first to have these boards approved for use in our region. We anticipate having them ready for customers building in urban interface areas by spring thaw.

Using these new Trex boards keeps Zion Builders at the forefront of high‑quality, fire‑resistant deck construction. Contact Zion Builders, Inc. at 775-224-4860 to learn how to get a WUI compliant deck that complements your wildland backyard.
Construction Design Manager Bob Smith has extensive experience working with municipalities to confirm which materials meet wildland fire safety standards, helping ensure permits are issued without unnecessary delays.
